Weird Weeks

If I say...

this Monday, it means October 24th (the coming Monday)

BUT

this summer, it means the summer in 2011.

It sounds so weird to me.

I asked my conversation partner ( a UCLA student minoring Japanese) why,
but he also had difficulty in explaining why.
